Patti Smith, Ph.D.; is the Senior Director of the Center for School Design at the National Academy Foundation where she is leading the Center’s national high school reform agenda in large urban districts including New York City and Miami.  Previously she worked at Brown University’s Education Alliance, where she was Assistant Director for Secondary Redesign managing the technical assistance program for Small Learning Community grantees sponsored by the Northwest Regional Lab. Dr. Smith was a senior consultant involved in the development of Breaking Ranks II and Breaking Ranks in the Middle, both important reform documents produced by the National Association of Secondary School principals. Prior to working at Brown University, she worked for years in the greater New York metropolitan area including at Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound and City College of New York (CCNY) in the Institute for Research in the African Diaspora in the Americas and the Caribbean.  She was a faculty member and administrator at the Green Meadow Waldorf School, a k-12 independent school in Chestnut Ridge, New York where she also served as a kindergarten teacher for 10 years.  She is a representative at the National High School Alliance and contributed to the development of A Call to Action.  Her publications include: More Lifeways: Finding support and inspiration in family life; Taking a Risk in Education: Waldorf Inspired Public Schools, and numerous journal articles on student voice and personalization for high school students.
