Fundamentalism is today a worldwide phenomenon. In this lecture we will explore the nature of fundamentalism in its various forms, with the aim of being able to engage it creatively.  As an aid in this task, we will draw especially upon Rudolf Steiner’s description of the evolution of consciousness.

Douglas Sloan is Professor of History and Education Emeritus at Teachers College, Columbia University. For many years, he was also Adjunct Professor of Religion and Education at Union Theological Seminary and The Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City. Among his books are: Insight-Imagination: The Emancipation of Thought and the Modern World and Faith and Knowledge: Mainline Protestantism and American Higher Education.
